What you don’t include on your resume can be just as important, if not more important than what you don’t put on your resume. So, what doesn’t belong on a resume today? Here’s some information we’ve compiled to make your employment search smoother.

1. Don’t use an inappropriate email address

And exclude any nicknames, numbers, or special characters from your email.

2. Don’t include unnecessary personal information

Leave out any personal details such as age, weight, height, marital status, religious preference or political views. This will prevent any potential bias.  Never include your Social Insurance Number in your resume.

3. Don’t include a picture of yourself

In Canada, it is NOT the norm to include a photo on your Resume. It will divert the focus from your resume and away from your skills and experience, and lower your chances of obtaining the position.

4. Don’t use too many bullets

Make your resume easy to read. Limit each section or subsection to 5-7 bullet points. This will make your resume easier to scan. Each bullet point should be used wisely by keeping the information relevant and concise.

5. Don’t use personal pronouns

Write your resume in the third person, as if it’s being written by someone else. Do not use “I,” “my,” or “me”.

6. Don’t simply list job responsibilities

Your job duties will be obvious from your job title. Instead, highlight your achievements by putting a personal spin on your job duties and providing specific examples.

7. Don’t make general statements

Vague or Unclear statements don’t highlight your actual contribution and do not provide any information to an employer.

8. Don’t include reasons for leaving previous jobs

The main purpose of your resume is to promote you, your skills, experience, and achievements. It should be entirely positive, and therefore it should not include reasons for leaving

9. Don’t include references

Keep your references on a separate sheet and provide them only when they are specifically requested.

10. Don’t include hobbies or interests

If it does not add any value to you as a candidate it is not recommended to mention hobbies or interests. However, if your hobby relates to the position, you may include it.
